10 Ways to Open Up the Heart Chakra

Having a closed Heart Chakra can feel debilitating. The Heart Chakra connects your lower three and upper three Chakras, and only through it is healing possible. This powerful energy center is the source of joy, love, and compassion or sadness, sorrow, and resentment,

Your Heart Chakra may be closed if you feel out of control of your emotions. You may perform acts of love only because you expect them in return. Love feels conditional and like you might be faking it. If the symptoms of a closed Heart Chakra sound familiar to you, follow one, a few, or all ten of these steps to reach a place where love for yourself and others feels completely natural and genuine. You deserve to experience the unconditional love associated with an open and balanced Heart Chakra!

1. Think of a challenging relationship you may have.

Write down why you are grateful for that relationship… what has it helped you learn? Did your ex-boyfriend show you what you aren’t looking for in a future partner? Has fighting with your sibling taught you that forgiveness is stronger than revenge? Acknowledging a certain negative relationship in your life and defining something positive you learned from it is a valuable step towards making your relationships serve you better.

2. Support your immune system with superfoods!

Chia, Goji berries, acai, leafy greens, sprouts, wheat grass, algae, Chlorella, Spirulina, seaweed, Reishi mushrooms, and Maitake mushrooms are all loaded with immune-boosting nutrients and antioxidants. Superfood ingredients are becoming more widely available in commercial grocery stores, but if you have trouble finding them, also check out kale, broccoli, cabbage, celery, plums, cherries, and strawberries. These super healthy plant foods are especially supportive of the Heart Chakra!

3. Support the physical health of your heart with spices that increase circulation.

Our favorites are cinnamon, turmeric, and cayenne pepper!

4. Repeat this affirmation, “The past is gone. I live only in the present”.

As we move forward in our lives and shed negative relationships, is it still possible (and totally normal!) to feel hurt or bitter by the impact of people from our past. This affirmation is a great reminder to stay mindful of your current situation, let go of the past, acknowledge your present life, and move towards your future, keeping in mind the “present” that you want to live.

Dancing is good for your physical health as well as an outlet for our emotions. Check out what dance classes are available in your neighborhood. Zumba is a great place to start for beginners with easy, follow along moves. If you are feeling super shy about your skills, look on Youtube for tutorials! There may be one that breaks down all the moves from your favorite song’s music video. Of course, choreography is totally optional. When in doubt, put on some danceable music while you are cooking in the kitchen or cleaning your apartment and move in whatever way inspires you! There is no wrong way to dance!

6. Keep a rose quartz crystal nearby.

Rose quartz is associated with the Heart Chakra and known for it’s ability to attract positive, loving relationships, and improve existing relationships that may be strained. It is emotionally comforting to the beholder and promotes compassion, peace, and tenderness. Place a rose quartz crystal on your bedside table, or wear a piece of jewelry incorporating the gem as a reminder of how are worthy of love.

7. Spend some time with children and animals.

Children are brimming with natural positivity and show amazing displays of unrestricted affection for their mothers, fathers, siblings, and other relatives. Animals are also easy to bond with and show unconditional love for their caretakers. If you don’t have children, nieces or nephews, or a loving pet of your own, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities where can give back to the community and receive the unconditional love and adoration of a child or animal in return. Everyone wins!

8. Yoga

Poses such as camel pose, eagle pose, and back bends, are great for opening the Heart Chakra. They open the chest cavity and expose the heart to a more vulnerable position. Pausing in one of these poses for a few conscious breaths can work wonders for the heart.

9. Smile at everyone you pass!

Smiling is proven to reduce stress and improve your mood, even if you are forcing it! Spread the love to others and feel the warmth in your Heart Chakra spread throughout your spirit.

10. Self-love

For all of the love we give to and receive from others, it is good to take part in similar acts of self love. Make a list of things you love about your body, your mind, or your personality. Treat yourself to a massage full of healing touch. Buy yourself a bouquet of fresh flowers, (bonus points if it contains any bleeding heart, nootka root, flox, or borage!). Make loving yourself part of your regular routine and you will certainly feel your Heart Chakra open wide in the most joyous way.
